Nokia — Lumia 520 Custom Rom
Released in 2013, the Nokia Lumia 520 was the budget smartphone champion of its era. It ran Windows Phone 8, a buttery-smooth operating system famous for its "Metro UI" and Live Tiles. Millions of units were sold globally. But a decade later, if you pull a Lumia 520 out of a drawer, you are greeted with a harsh reality: The Windows Store is shut down. WhatsApp, Spotify, and even basic browsers like Opera Mini no longer work. The phone is, by official standards, a brick.
Excellent case. A few months before this was published, I met Lee Ranaldo at a film he was presenting and I brought this album for him to sign. Lee said it was his “favorite” Sonic Youth album, and (no surprise) it’s mine too, which is why I brought it.
For the record, I love and own nearly every studio album they released, so it’s not a mere preference for a particular stage of their career – it’s simply the one that came out on top.
Nice appreciative analysis of Sonic Youth’s strongest and most artistic ’90s album. I dug a little deeper in my analysis (‘Beyond SubUrbia: A View Through the Trees’), but I think my Gen-x perspective demanded that.
