The dynamics of their world were cruel. Sousuke was the "Protagonist," the one who collected hearts like trophies, often discarding them or parading them to inflict maximum misery on those like Kaito. This was the essence of the protocol: a system designed to ensure the "Netorare" dynamic held firm. Kaito was the loser; Sousuke the winner. Excellent case. A few months before this was published, I met Lee Ranaldo at a film he was presenting and I brought this album for him to sign. Lee said it was his “favorite” Sonic Youth album, and (no surprise) it’s mine too, which is why I brought it.
For the record, I love and own nearly every studio album they released, so it’s not a mere preference for a particular stage of their career – it’s simply the one that came out on top.
Nice appreciative analysis of Sonic Youth’s strongest and most artistic ’90s album. I dug a little deeper in my analysis (‘Beyond SubUrbia: A View Through the Trees’), but I think my Gen-x perspective demanded that.
